Help the Fife Red Squirrel Project by getting involved in various activities, including surveying and monitoring, educational work, awareness raising or grey squirrel control.

For instance, you can “adopt a wood” near you and go for regular squirrel spotting walks, then just send us your sightings. Each record will be added to our database and will help us create a more accurate picture of red and grey squirrel distribution in Fife. This will in turn help us better target our conservation efforts. Alternatively, you can monitor a transect, which will give us an idea of changes in red squirrel populations over time. All records also feed into the national database and comply with the Scottish Squirrel Survey methodology. There are also opportunities to help at events, with school visits and our educational programme, and with localised, targeted grey squirrel control work. We are currently raising funds towards a three year, Fife-wide red squirrel conservation project.

Over the last two years, we have been focusing on two localised projects at Ladybank Forest in the Howe of Fife and Devilla Forest near Kincardine. These “pilot” red squirrel conservation projects helped us develop our strategy. We now feel that, rather than being limited to site-based conservation, we would like to roll out a similar conservation project across the whole of Fife. We aim to focus our efforts on the most important red squirrel sites, but offer information, support and educational activities across the whole kingdom. We would also be able to assist community based red squirrel conservation initiatives Fife-wide. We would gratefully receive any donations towards the Fife Red Squirrel Project.
